Ok, so at the end there was no murder committed with the enormous hanging hook by the docks. In the second photo, it was either breezy, or else my daughter used a bit too much hair gel.

A Crime About to Happen
Look carefully, and you will see the intended murder weapon. I don't know why both victim and perpetrator are laughing giddily.
The Perils of Fine Dining
So, apart from the handful of courtesy phrases I remembered from the time a few years ago I studied a bit of Greek, I remembered or picked up a number of mission-critical words: krasi (wine), aspro (white wine), krasi kokkono (red wine), byra (beer) - I'm sure there were others, though I don't remember them right now. But there was also "estiatorio," for restaurant. One restaurant had a very neat design (see second photo): a set of thin stainless steel shapes nailed into the wall, meant so that each one resembled a fish (with the nail being the eye) but that the whole group looked like a school of fish, swimming toward the restaurant so that we could eat them. OK, so fish aren't smart, especially ones made of steel. Turns out that there was a similar work of art inside the restaurant, right behind our table, right about upper torso level. And it turns out that there's a mathematically good probability that someone in our party might rise abruptly from her chair, wheel around to leave, and stab herself with about fifteen very narrow, very sharp, stainless steel fish-shaped stakes.

Santorini Signs
In point of fact, I saw no snails at all on the island. Nor did we see any Argonauts, despite the street name.

Blue
Filoteras was the cave house where we stayed. It overlooked the crater lake; this is the view from its top (reception) floor patio. Most of the buildings on the island are painted white to reflect the sunlight, but the churches usually have blue domes, like these.

People I Know in Greece ...
... but who are no longer there. They include my daughter, who most certainly is not pointing toward a bottle of alcoholic liquid in the top photos and encouraging her mother to buy it for her; and both my daughters together, neither of whom chose to push the other one over the ledge and over the cliff and down to the seas after taking this photo, which is a powerful testament to my impeccable parenting skills and their keen sense of not doing things you are likely to get caught for when policemen are strolling nearby, another wise legacy I have given them.
